With the increased footfall in and around the town it has become more important than ever to ensure the main transport routes and roads are looking tidy and colourful all year round. This area was a project that was undertaken approximately 5 years ago which transformed an overgrown area into a bright colourful well looked after garden which is used on a regular basis as a main walkway or seating area now it has been cleared. Due to the nature of this project we felt the most appropriate name for the gardens were the ‘Prestatyn in Bloom’ Gardens as they symbolise one of many improvements in the Town which have been brought about by the competition.
Prestatyn and District Environmental Association’s vision came true when they successfully gained a grant to create a 14 hectare Community Woodland area which was developed on the land of a former landfill plot. The project including creating access improvements, surfacing and landscaping a car park, interpretation boards, planting of 10,000 trees and soil enrichment, seating, picnic areas and signage. This area is very popular with residents and attracts many walkers. Today due to the sheer dedication of PDEA and other partners the Coed y Morfa Community Woodland has now expanded to cover 36 hectares and has achieved the Green Flag Award again this year for the 10th consecutive year.
Community Centres are well used by residents and different community groups throughout the town and therefore the gardens that they are situated in are an important part of our efforts for Prestatyn in Bloom.
The Ffrith Community Park was always seen as a ‘eyesore’ to many of the residents until the Friends of the Ffrith and other groups got involved to improve and maintain the area. They improved the walkways and pathways, provided signage and information boards throughout out the gardens. They have also looked after the pond areas and have planted trees with the Scout group around the gardens.
Coronation gardens were developed in 1911 to commemorate the Coronation of the Queen Mary and George V. Over the last few years we have planted a variety of specialised trees in the gardens which have been to mark 100 years of Coronation gardens and then the following year for the Queen’s diamond jubilee. Adjacent to the gardens we have recently had improvements made to the play area which has seen new play equipment, a little road system for small children to ride their bikes and learn the green cross code and a general tidy up of the area. The Prestatyn in Bloom committee have stepped in this year to plant bedding plants and bring some additional colour to the gardens as the Local Authority are not currently planting the gardens up.
Prestatyn in Bloom volunteers Sylvia, Tony and Paul have been working throughout the year to maintain three of the flowerbeds in Prestatyn High Street which are located in keys sites of people visiting the town centre and shopping park. Their work has been recognised with them winning a Community Endeavour Award this year.
The Bodnant Estate bed was built and is maintained by the Prestatyn Environmental association. The Spar Bed has been adopted by Prestatyn in Bloom committee this year and has been planted up with Hucheras. These two locations have been chosen to brighten up min access routes into the town centre and shopping park.
